Seminole Sunday Sauce — June 16, 2024: FSU Baseball Melts Down in CWS Opener

For Florida State baseball, it would be hard to find a more heartbreaking way to lose its first College World Series game in five years than it did on Friday. No. 8 FSU let a 5-run lead, including a 3-run lead in the ninth slip away in a 12-11 walk-off loss to No. 1 Tennessee.

Down 4-1 early, the Seminoles appeared to seize control with a 6-run third. FSU added to its lead with a 2-run home run from Jaime Ferrer in the fifth.

Tennessee was able to get as close as two before Marco Dinges’ 2-run double in the seventh pushed the FSU advantage to 11-7. The Volunteers added a run in the eighth before plating four in the ninth.

After getting a fortunate call on a check swing that many thought was strike three, Blake Burke rolled a 2-run single up the middle to tie the game. Burke scored the winning run on Dylan Dreiling’s walk-off hit later in the frame.

Tennessee’s Christian Moore was the story as he finished 5-for-6 and became the second player in College World Series history to hit for the cycle. Dreiling added four hits. Dinges finished with three hits for FSU. Ferrer finished with four RBIs.

The Seminoles will try to keep their season alive on Sunday when they face Virginia in an elimination game. The contest is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET and will air on ESPN.
