FSU Bests Florida, Dominates Miami Head-to-Head During 2023-24 Athletic Year

The 2023-24 year in athletics for Florida State came to an end on Wednesday as the Seminoles were bounced from the baseball diamond by No. 1 Tennessee at the College World Series. Overall, however, it was a year to remember for FSU on the playing fields, courts and in the classroom.

While the snub from the College Football Playoff Committee ruined an otherwise splendid football season, FSU soccer claimed its fourth national championship — all within the last 10 years. In addition to the pitch and the gridiron, FSU also claimed the ACC title in men’s tennis, its first, as well as the CCSA crown in beach volleyball. In men’s golf, FSU finished as national runners-up for the first time ever.

The team accomplishments speak for themselves, but the bragging rights often come with how teams fare against their rivals. For FSU, things went well against Florida and incredibly well against Miami. Below is a look at how the Seminoles fared across all sports in head-to-head competition against its two biggest rivals.

When it came to rival Florida, the only sports where the Seminoles and Gators met multiple times came on the diamond. After holding the losing hand to Florida more often than not on the baseball diamond over the last decade, FSU dominated the series this season. The Seminoles swept the three meetings by a combined 45-15 margin with two of the victories coming by run rule.

FSU softball was able to run its longest winning streak over rival Florida as a fastpitch program to six with a 12-3 run-rule victory in Gainesville on April 24. The Gators were able to get off the schneid against the Seminoles a week later in Tallahassee in a 15-13 extra-inning thriller.

Florida got the better of FSU in the pool while the teams split men’s and women’s sports on the basketball and tennis courts. FSU ran its winning streak over Florida to two in football and women’s hoops and to six in soccer. Four of those FSU victories over the Gators on the soccer pitch have come by shutout. Florida outlasted FSU in a 5-set volleyball thriller back in the fall.

When it came to rival Miami, FSU absolutely dominated this past year. The Seminoles won 13 of 14 total matchups, which included sweeps in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball. On the gridiron, FSU grinded out a 27-20 win over the Hurricanes to take its third straight in the series. FSU has won four straight over Miami in soccer and volleyball.

While FSU men’s tennis took the lone meeting against the Hurricanes this season, FSU women’s tennis was the only program for the Seminoles to lose to Miami. FSU, however, avenged a 5-2 loss in Coral Gables on March 10 with a 4-1 win over the Hurricanes to open the ACC Tournament more than a month later.

As exciting as it can be for fans to watch their team compete for national and conference titles, beating rivals can be just as sweet. With 22 wins in 29 total head-to-head matchups with Florida and Miami, the Seminoles did plenty of that over the last year.
