Seminole Sunday Sauce — June 9, 2024: FSU Baseball Advances to College World Series

For the first time in five years, Florida State baseball is headed to the College World Series. The Seminoles advanced with five straight wins to open the postseason.

FSU advanced to the Super Regional by going a perfect 3-0 during the Tallahassee Regional. The Seminoles clinched the spot in the Supers with a 12-4 win over UCF on Sunday night.

The Seminoles trailed 2-0 early, but went ahead for good with nine runs in the fifth inning. After a 2-run home run by Cam Smith tied the game, Max Williams’ 3-run shot put the exclamation point on the frame.

Williams and Marco Dinges each finished with hits in the win. Connor Hults picked up the victory with three innings of relief.

The Tallahassee Super Regional couldn’t have started much better for FSU. On Friday, the Seminoles set an NCAA record for runs in a Super Regional game in a 24-4 trouncing of Connecticut.

Marco Dinges and Jaime Ferrer set the tone with back-to-back home runs in the first inning to take an early 3-0 lead. As a team, FSU would homer five times. The Seminoles led 8-0 through three innings before blowing things open with six runs in the sixth and nine in the seventh.

Ferrer homered a second time for FSU while Max Williams and DeAmez Ross also left the yard. Ferrer, Cam Smith and Alex Lodise each finished with three hits for FSU. James Tibbs III and Dinges each finished with four RBIs. Daniel Cantu scored four runs.

The Seminoles needed 12 innings to finally down the Huskies on Saturday. Tibbs’ third 2-run home run of the day put FSU ahead for good in the top of the 12th in a 10-8 victory.

Tibbs finished with five hits in the victory. Williams and Dinges also homered in the victory. As a team, FSU left the yard six times.

UConn led 2-0 early and regained the lead in the sixth on Luke Broadhurst’s 3-run double. After Jaxson West tied the game with a solo home run in the eighth, FSU regained an 8-7 lead on Drew Faurot’s sacrifice fly. In the bottom of the ninth, however, UConn’s Matt Malcom led off with a game-tying solo shot of his own.

Conner Whittaker worked 3.2 innings of scoreless relief to pick up the win. FSU will begin its stay in Omaha on Friday or Saturday. It will face the winner of Sunday’s game between No. 1 Tennessee and Evansville.
