Seminole Sunday Sauce — June 2, 2024: FSU Men’s Golf Falls in National Championship to Cap Historic Season
Florida State men’s golf fell just shy of winning its first national championship, but managed to complete the greatest season in program history.
After a rough start to stroke play, FSU wound up finishing fifth as a team to advance to the quarterfinals. Luke Clanton finished second overall at 2-under par, narrowly missing the individual national title.
In the quarterfinals, FSU finished strong for a 3-1 win over North Carolina. Tyler Weaver clinched the victory for FSU with a 3&2 win over North Carolina’s David Ford. Clanton and Brett Roberts also won their matchups.
In the semifinals against Georgia Tech, FSU had to win the final two matchups to take a 3-2 victory. After Weaver took the 19th hole to defeat Georgia Tech’s Kale Fontenot, Frederik Kjkettrup sealed the deal with a 3&1 win over Hiroshi Tai.
FSU would ultimately fall to Auburn for the national championship, 3-2. Weaver and Cole Anderson each won their matchups, but Auburn’s J.M Butler defeated Clanton 2&1 to clinch the victory.
With its first appearance in the national championship match, FSU men’s golf became the third group of Seminoles to play for a national title this athletics year. FSU soccer claimed the national championship in the fall. Although FSU men’s tennis fell in the Sweet 16, the duo of Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc and Joshua Dous-Karpenschif reached the final in doubles last week before falling to Ohio State’s Robert Cash and JJ Tracy in a third-set tiebreaker.
