Seminole Sunday Sauce — April 28, 2024: FSU Claims Conference titles in Men’s Tennis, Beach Volleyball

This past week saw Florida State snag a pair of conference titles.

For one program, it marked a first. For the other, it’s beginning to become a formality.

One week ago, history was made. For the first time in program history, Florida State men’s tennis claimed the ACC title.

In the ACC Championship in Cary, N.C., FSU won the final three matches to stun No. 2 Virginia, 4-3. It was FSU’s fourth victory in four days, making the program the first ACC championship to complete that feat. The Seminoles opened the ACC Tournament with wins over No. 61 Virginia Tech, No. 16 NC State and No. 7 Wake Forest.

After dropping the doubles point and the first singles match, it looked as though Jamie Connel’s straight-set victory would be all that FSU would get. Trailing 3-1, Loris Pourroy, Alex Bulte, and Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc all won 3-set matches to give the Seminoles the title.

The contest came down to Court 1 where top-5 players in Cornut-Chauvinc and Virginia’s Chris Rodesch squared off. After trading 7-6 sets, a break point was the difference as Cornut-Chauvinc’s 7-5 victory in the decisive set sent the Seminoles hope as champions. The tournament’s No. 6 seed, the Seminoles became the lowest-seeded team ever to capture the ACC title.

With the four wins in four days, FSU soared to No. 9 in the ITA rankings. At 21-7, the Seminoles also likely secured themselves a home regional. The NCAA Tournament Selection Show will be held on Monday.

FSU beach volleyball claimed its seventh CCSA championship in eight years. The Seminoles cruised through Huntsville without losing a match.

In the tournament opener, FSU didn’t lose a single set in its 5-0 win over South Carolina. The fourth-ranked Seminoles followed that up with a 3-0 win over No. 10 LSU to reach the title match. Following a pair of straight-set wins, Alli Hansen and Anna Long bounced back from a loss in the opening set to beat the Tigers’ pair of Reilly Allred and Parker Bracken in three sets to clinch the win.

In a championship rematch with South Carolina, the recipe for success was similar. Pairs of Audrey Koenig and Raelyn White and Caitlin Moon and Kaileigh Truslow won in straight sets for FSU before Alexis Durish and Maddie Anderson bounced back from a first-set loss to seal the title and complete the 3-0 victory with a 3-set victory over South Carolina’s Skyler Allen and Riley Whitesides.

Up next for FSU is the NCAA Tournament. The Seminoles will learn their seed and first opponent on Sunday.
