Seminole Sunday Sauce — March 17, 2024: FSU Hoops Goes 1-1 in ACC Tournament
If Florida State men’s basketball’s season is in fact over, it will be a winning one.
The Seminoles split a pair of contests this week at the ACC Tournament in Washington D.C. After scoring an impressive 86-76 win over Virginia Tech in the second round on Wednesday, the Seminoles were handled by top-seeded North Carolina on Thursday in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals.
Ninth-seeded FSU used an 11-0 run late in the second half to seize control in Wednesday’s win over No. 8 seed Virginia Tech. Jamir Watkins paced the Seminoles with a career-high 34 points and 11 rebounds as FSU shot 54% from the field and out-rebounded the Hokies by a 34-25 margin.
Jalen Warley added 18 points in the victory. Primo Spears finished with 10 off the FSU bench. Sean Pedulla led Virginia Tech with 24 points and five assists.
Against North Carolina, FSU hung close for most of the first half before the Tar Heels mounted a 20-7 run to end the half. North Carolina led 46-30 at the break and never looked back.
Spears paced FSU with 17 points in the loss. North Carolina’s RJ Davis led all scorers with 18 points. Watkins finished with 12 points for the Seminoles in the loss.
With a record of 17-16 for the season, an NCAA Tournament bid is out of the question for FSU. The Seminoles, however, could qualify for a consolation tournament like the NIT. They’ll learn their fate on Sunday.
