Seminole Sunday Sauce — Dec. 15, 2024: FSU Women’s Hoops’ Latson Emerges as Nation’s Leading Scorer

For the season, Florida State women’s basketball is off to a commendable start. The Seminoles are 9-2 and receiving votes in the polls. The biggest reason so far has been junior guard Ta’Niya Latson.

After earning national recognitions last week, Latson was named the ACC Player of the Week for the second week in a row on Monday. After putting up 38 points in a heartbreaking 79-77 road loss at Tennessee in the ACC/SEC Challenge last week, Latson helped the Seminoles started ACC play on the right foot Sunday with a 39-point performance in a 93-85 win over SMU.

The 39 points was one shy of Natasha Howard’s program record set in 2014. Latson finished 13-for-26 from the field while adding seven rebounds and three steals.

A legitimate candidate to be the Naismith College Player of the Year Award — an honor no FSU player has ever won — Latson leads the nation in scoring, averaging 28.6 points per game. That’s four more points per game than USC’s JuJu Watkins, who is second nationally in that category.

Latson is doing so while shooting a solid 48.3% from the field. In addition to her 5.2 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game averages, Latson ranks in the top 10 in the ACC in steals per game (2.3) and free throw percentage (.817).

After two competitive contests, FSU will be heavy favorites in its final two non-conference games this week. The Seminoles host Drexel on Sunday and Jacksonville on Thursday.
