Seminole Sunday Sauce — Nov. 24, 2024: FSU Soccer Upset by Vandy in Second Round of NCAA Tournament

Florida State soccer’s repeat bid as national champions came to an unexpected end on Friday night. The top-seeded Seminoles were upset in the second round of the NCAA Tournament by No. 8 seed Vanderbilt on penalty kicks.

The Seminoles converted on their first three penalty kicks, but Vandy’s Sara Wojdelko saved the final two to end FSU’s season. The teams were tied 3-3 through 110 minutes of action.

FSU drew first blood on Marianyela Jimenez’s goal in the opening minute. By the 13-minute mark, however, FSU was on the short end of a 2-1 score.

Jordynn Dudley drew FSU even with a goal in the 30th minute. In the second half, Carolina Betts’ second goal of the night gave the Commodores a 3-2 lead in the 79th minute. It took the Seminoles less than three minutes to find the equalizer as Kameron Simmonds came through with the tying goal.

FSU dominated statistically with 24 shots to just six for Vanderbilt. FSU didn’t have a single save. Wojdelko finished with 12 for the Commodores.

The loss gives FSU its earliest exit since 2016.
