Seminole Sunday Sauce — July 21, 2024: Eight Seminoles Selected in 2024 MLB Draft
After an incredible bounce-back year for the program, a number of Florida State baseball players have found professional homes.
Eight Seminoles were selected this week in the 2024 Major League Baseball Draft. That was the most in the ACC and third-most in the nation.
Things kicked off on Sunday with outfielder James Tibbs III and third baseman Cam Smith going in the first round with back-to-back picks. It marked the first time since 1995 that FSU had multiple first-round selections.
Tibbs was selected with the No. 13 overall pick by the San Francisco Giants. Smith went to the Chicago Cubs with the 14th overall pick.
The ACC Player of the Year and a Consensus All-American, Tibbs finished his junior season with a .363 average, 28 home runs and 95 RBIs. Smith hit a team-best .387 with 16 homers, 57 RBIs, and a team-leading 22 doubles.
On Monday, Marco Dinges and outfielder Jaime Ferrer went three picks apart in the fourth round. Dinges, who batted .323 with 15 home runs and 69 RBIs in his lone season at FSU, was selected by the Milwaukee Brewers with the No. 123 overall pick. Ferrer was taken 126th overall by the Minnesota Twins after hitting .317 with 22 bombs and 67 RBIs as a junior.
Left-handed pitcher Carson Dorsey, a postseason hero, was taken with the No. 219 overall pick in the seventh round by the Baltimore Orioles. Dorsey finished 8-4 with a 4.60 ERA while striking out 88 batters in 76.1 innings.
Pitcher Gavin Adams, who missed all of 2024 to injury, was selected in the eighth round by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Yoel Tejeda Jr. and Conner Whittaker went in consecutive rounds to the Washington Nationals and Cleveland Guardians, respectively. Selected in the 14th round, Tejeda was 1-2 with a 5.95 ERA in 13 games this season while Whittaker went 5-0 with a 5.28 ERA.
In addition to the FSU players selected, the Seminoles also had eight incoming signees selected. Pitchers Aiden Butler, Mack Estrada, Chase Mobley and Josiah Romeo were each selected along with infielder Jack Lines, first baseman Myles Bailey, catcher Hunter Carns and outfielder Chase Williams. Non-college seniors will have the option between returning to or joining FSU and going pro.
