Seminole Sunday Sauce — May 22, 2022: FSU Baseball Limps into ACC Tournament as No. 9 Seed

After beginning the season as the ACC favorite, Florida State baseball will limp into the conference tournament as the No. 9 seed.

The Seminoles were flying high last Sunday after topping Miami in the rubber game of a 3-game set. FSU followed that up by dropping its final four games of the regular season.

Losses on Tuesday and Thursday each came by 7-5 scores and by serving up walk-off home runs.

In a 7-5 loss at Florida on Tuesday, it was Andrew Armstrong who surrendered the walk-off blast to the Gators’ Sterlin Thompson. At North Carolina on Thursday, FSU had rallied from four runs down to take a 5-4 lead on a 2-run home run by James Tibbs. One strike from victory in ninth, North Carolina’s Alberto Osuna blasted a 3-run walk-off shot — his second of the game — off of Wyatt Crowell to push the Tar Heels past the Seminoles.

With Parker Messick and Bryce Hubbart on the mound, things didn’t get any better to close the weekend. On Friday, North Carolina put the game away in the eighth with a grand slam from Danny Serretti in a 10-4 victory. On Sunday, FSU was blanked 11-0 by North Carolina, which homered three times for the second day in a row.

FSU closes the regular season with a record of 32-22 and 15-15 in ACC play. To advance to the ACC Tournament semifinals, FSU will need to beat its pool-mates — No. 4 seed Notre Dame and No. 5 seed Virginia. The Seminoles were 0-3 against Notre Dame this past season and did not play Virginia. An official ACC Tournament schedule will be released on Sunday.
