Seminole Sunday Sauce — Jan. 22, 2023: FSU Men’s Tennis Ascends Into Top 10 Following Hot Start

After its first run to the Sweet 16 in 13 years last season, Florida State men’s tennis seems to be picking up where it left off in 2023.

The Seminoles rose six spots to No. 10 in the latest ITA rankings this week. After opening the year with 5-2 wins over Hawaii and California in Honolulu, FSU picked up a statement win on Sunday with a 5-2 victory over then No. 7 Georgia.

In what was a rematch of last season’s second-round NCAA Tournament matchup, the Seminoles started and finished strong. Youcef Rihane rallied to clinch the victory for the Seminoles with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over Georgia’s Trent Bryde. Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc, Jamie Connel and Andreja Petrovic also picked up singles victories for FSU.

On Saturday, FSU improved to 4-0 and kept the momentum going with its most convincing win of the season — a 6-1 home victory over Florida Atlantic. The Seminoles dropped the doubles point but won all six singles matchups.

Rihane again clinched the victory for FSU with a 7-5, 6-2 win over FAU’s Joao Graca. Five of the six singles wins for FSU came in straight sets. Barnaby Smith rallied from a first-set loss to beat Hunter Robbins to conclude the dual, 1-6, 6-3, 7-6.

Since dual play started, Cornut-Chauvinc and Rihane are each 4-0 in single matches for the Seminoles. Connel, a Furman transfer, and Petrovic are each 3-0. Cornut-Chauvinc was named ACC Performer of the Week this past week while he and Smith earned ACC Doubles Pair of the Week honors.

FSU will get an extended rest before heading to Waco for ITA Kickoff Weekend. The Seminoles will take on San Diego on Friday.
