The Daily Sauce — Sept. 5, 2022: FSU Football Blocks PAT to Hold Off LSU in New Orleans, 24-23

Happy Labor Day, Florida State fans.

It’ll probably be hard to top Sunday, but as you try, see what’s in The Daily Sauce.

Lead Story

Florida State football averted disaster on Sunday night as a blocked extra point preserved a 24-23 victory over LSU and prevented an epic collapse.

The Seminoles led by 14 points and two occasions, including with less than five minutes to go. LSU cut the lead in half on a 22-yard touchdown pass from Jayden Daniels to Jaray Jenkins. Following a stop, it appeared as though the Seminoles had secured victory after LSU’s Malik Nabers muffed his second punt and FSU recovered inside the Tigers’ 10-yard-line.

With the game seemingly secured, Treshaun Ward fumbled at the 1 and LSU proceeded to march 99 yards. On the final play of regulation, Daniels found Jenkins for a 2-yard touchdown. The potential tying PAT, however, was blocked by FSU’s Shyheim Brown and the Seminoles escaped.

Jordan Travis passed for 260 yards and two touchdowns to Ontaria Wilson in the FSU victory. Wilson led all receivers with seven catches for 102 yards and two touchdowns. Defensively, Jared Verse finished with two sacks, 2.5 tackles for loss and a blocked field goal.

Daniels finished with 206 yards passing and two scores, but was most dangerous with his legs, rushing for 114 yards. LSU’s Noah Cain and FSU’s DJ Lundy, a linebacker playing fullback, each scored 1-yard touchdowns for their respective teams.

FSU is now 2-0 for the first time since 2016. The Seminoles will have next week off before traveling to face Louisville on Sept. 16. LSU is 0-1 for the third straight year after losing its debut under Brian Kelly.
