Florida State women’s hoops showed grit and resolve on Thanksgiving afternoon, but ultimately came up one basket short to kick off the Cancun Challenge. The Seminoles fell for the first time this season on Thursday to Oklahoma State, 79-77.

FSU trailed by as many as 15 points in the first half and 49-35 at halftime. The Seminoles dominated the second half and got as close as one in the final seconds. Trailing 79-77 on the game’s final possession, Ta’Niya Latson missed the tying jumper.

Latson led FSU with 20 points and eight rebounds in the loss. Makayla Timpson, Sara Bejedi, and O’Mariah Gordon added 15, 13, and 11 points, respectively, in the defeat.

The Cowgirls shot better from the field, the foul line and won the rebounding battle. Namoie Alnatas led the way with 19 points for Oklahoma State while Terryn Milton tallied 17. Taylen Collins recorded 12 points and 17 rebounds in the win.

With the loss, FSU falls to 5-1 on the season. The Seminoles will continue the Cancun Challenge on Friday against Purdue.

With FSU hoops’ loss to Sienna on Thursday, it was sent to the loser’s bracket at the ESPN Events Invitational. The Seminoles will take on Stanford on Friday. The Cardinal fell to Ole Miss on Thursday. Both teams will wrap up the event on Sunday against either Memphis or Nebraska.

The DFNS staff gave its predictions for Friday night’s football contest between FSU and Florida.
