The Daily Sauce — Nov. 19, 2022: FSU Soccer Rolls Past LSU to Sweet 16

It’s the weekend, Florida State fans.

As you prepare for a day of football or family, see what’s in The Daily Sauce.

Lead Story

For the sixth straight year, Florida State soccer is headed to the Sweet 16. The No. 1 seed Seminoles scored the match’s final four goals on Friday night to top No. 8 seed LSU in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, 4-1.

For a brief moment, there was cause for concern. In the 10th minute, Wasila Diwura-Soale found the back of the net to give the Tigers an early 1-0 lead. That lasted for about 10 minutes before Jenna Nighswonger drew the Seminoles even.

LSU didn’t score again as FSU erupted for three second-half goals to break a halftime tie for the second straight match. Ran Iwai’s first goal of the season after Jody Brown’s shot was saved put FSU ahead for good. Onyi Echegini’s 10th goal less than three minutes later gave the Seminoles some breathing room. Amelia Horton capped the scoring with her first goal of the year in the 79th minute.

FSU dominated with 27 shots to just five for the Tigers. Only two of LSU’s shots were on goal, compared to eight for the Seminoles.

Brown, Nighswonger, Leilanni Nesbeth, Beata Olsson, and Heather Payne all tallied assists in the win. Angelina Thoreson assisted on the lone LSU goal.

FSU will return to the pitch on Sunday as it takes on ACC foe Pittsburgh in the Sweet 16. The Panthers topped Georgetown on Friday night to advance, 2-1. FSU beat Pitt 1-0 when the teams met in Pittsburgh on Oct. 23.
