The Daily Sauce — March 7, 2022: Pitt Hands FSU Softball First Loss

It’s Monday, Florida State fans.

As you start a new week, see what’s in The Daily Sauce.

Lead Story

For the first time this season, Florida State softball went home a loser on Sunday. Pittsburgh used three 2-run home runs to hand the Seminoles their first defeat of the season at JoAnne Graf Field, 7-5.

Four of the five FSU runs came in the first inning as the Seminoles raced to a 4-1 lead. The Panthers however, chipped away throughout the day with the long ball.

After Kayla Lane’s 2-run blast in the second cut the deficit to 4-3, Cami Compson put Pittsburgh in front with a 2-run homer of her own in the third. FSU managed to draw even in the fifth on Jahni Kerr’s RBI double, but that was short-lived. Pitt went ahead for good on Katlyn Pavlick’s 2-run home run in the sixth.

For the first time all year, FSU starting pitcher Kathryn Sandercock struggled from the circle. It was Danielle Watson however, who ultimately took the loss for the Seminoles.

Dani Drogemuller went the distance for Pittsburgh, yielding just one earned run on five hits. Kaley Mudge had two of those hits and scored a run for the Seminoles. Devyn Flaherty scored twice the loss while Kerr drove in two of the five FSU runs.

With the defeat, FSU falls to 19-1 and 2-1 in ACC play. The Seminoles remain home for a contest against Furman on Tuesday.
