The Daily Sauce — April 30, 2022: Culp’s Blast Lifts FSU Softball to Sweep of No. 6 Oklahoma State

It’s the weekend, Florida State fans.

As you make big plans, see what’s in The Daily Sauce.

Lead Story

For the second day in a row on Friday, Florida State softball used a late run to beat No. 6 Oklahoma State 2-1 in a top-10 matchup. Chloe Culp’s pinch-hit blast in the sixth inning helped the fourth-ranked Seminoles complete the 2-game sweep.

The night prior, it was an errant throw in the bottom of the ninth that gave FSU the victory. Homerless to this point in the season, Culp hit for Amaya Ross on Friday and played the hero. On a 2-1 pitch, Culp lifted one over the wall in straightaway centerfield for a solo home run to put the Seminoles ahead for good.

FSU’s first run came on a solo blast from Sydney Sherrill in the first. Oklahoma State tied the game and nearly took the lead in the fourth on an RBI single from Sydney Pennington. On the sharp single to left, FSU’s Kaley Mudge was able to throw out Katelynn Carwile at the plate to end the inning and keep a second run from scoring.

Pitcher Kathryn Sandercock allowed a run on three hits in five innings of relief to pick up the win for FSU. Oklahoma State’s Morgan Day took the loss despite allowing just two hits — both solo home runs.

With the win, FSU moves to 45-5 on the season. FSU will host rival Florida on Wednesday before visiting NC State for three games to end the regular season.

The winner of Saturday’s beach volleyball match between FSU and LSU will go on to face TCU for the CCSA Championship later in the day.

FSU baseball’s Parker Messick tied a career-high with 14 strikeouts in Friday’s 10-0 win over TCU.

Seventy FSU student-athletes are set to graduate during upcoming commencement ceremonies.
