Four-star DB Recapping Visit

Class of 2023 defensive back prospect Kenton “KJ” Kirkland tripped to Tallahassee on Saturday, the 22nd. The four-star Raines High School product has already compiled a dozen offers from some of the nation’s premiere programs, including Georgia, LSU, Michigan, Florida, Miami, and others.

“Everything was great,” said Kirkland regarding the visit. “The way the coaches present themselves, the way they talk about the program, how the program is, outside the program — everything is going well. It was everything I wanted to hear. Overall, it was a great experience.”

What stood out most?

The 6-foot-1, 180-pounder shared the highlight of the visit, which Kirkland described as his meeting with head coach Mike Norvell before departing campus.

“Talking with Coach (Mike) Norvell is one of the things that stuck out most, because some coaches try to put this fake face on, but I can tell Coach Norvell kept it real,” explained Kirkland. “He told me everything I needed to hear. He’s just a great guy overall.”

“One thing that stood out to me, was when (Norvell) said, ‘if you’re not willing to work, then don’t come here. If you’re not willing to grind and put in the extra hours, then don’t come here.’ That stood out to me most, but he said, ‘you are not going to like me when you first get here,’ and that’s what I need in a coach, because it is all about development and making you a better player on the field and better person off the field.”

Relationship with Woodson

Kirkland spent a healthy portion of the visit bonding with defensive backs coach Marcus Woodson, who is recruiting Kirkland as a cornerback.

“Everything you look for in a coach,” said Kirkland describing Woodson. “He’s a great guy, great position coach. I definitely look forward to keeping a relationship with him.”

Kirkland visited Georgia last weekend and will trip to both UCF and Florida this upcoming weekend. He intends to return to FSU on March 5 for another unofficial visit.

Where does Florida State stand after the visit?

“Definitely in the top-3,” revealed Kirkland.
