Seminole Sunday Sauce — Aug. 25, 2024: FSU Football Stunned by Georgia Tech in Ireland, 24-21
After winning 19 games in a row, Florida State football now has a 2-game losing streak. The 10th-ranked Seminoles were stunned in their opener on Saturday with a 24-21 loss to Georgia Tech in the Aer Lingus College Football Classic.
After FSU’s Roydell Williams capped a 15-play, 84-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown run to tie the game, Georgia Tech kicker Aidan Birr knocked home a 44-yard field goal as time expired to give the Yellow Jackets the victory. Jamal Haynes rushed for two touchdowns for Georgia Tech.
For the fourth straight game dating back to last season, FSU was held to less than 300 yards of offense. Lawrance Toafili’s 28-yard touchdown run gave the Seminoles an early 8-0 lead, but offense was hard to come by after that. Kicker Ryan Fitzgerald was a bright spot for FSU, making field goals of 52 and 59 yards — the second-longest in program history.
In his FSU debut, quarterback DJ Uiagalelei finished 19-for-27 passing for 193 yards. Neither team turned the ball over.
FSU is now 0-1 for the first time since 2021. It will try to right the ship on Labor Day when it hosts Boston College.
