Diamond ‘Noles in the Pros: Week of 6/28

As we draw nearer to the All-Star break, let’s check in on our Seminoles in the Majors.

Buster Posey, C, San Francisco Giants

Buster was 6 for 22 at the plate (.273) this last week with 2 of those 6 hits being doubles, but was only able to add one RBI. He did score a pair of runs and walked 5 times, but also struck out 6 times and grounded into a double play. Posey was named the starting catcher in what will be his 7th All-Star game, but it wasn’t the most ideal weekend. He left Sunday’s game against the Diamondbacks with a thumb contusion after being struck by a foul ball, causing fans to assume the worst. X-rays were negative, thankfully, and manager Gabe Kapler considers him day-to-day.

Taylor Walls, SS, Tampa Bay Rays

Walls was activated from the injured list on Saturday, and returned to the starting lineup on Sunday. For the weekend, Walls went 1 for 5 and drove in a run and struck out twice. Is it a coincidence that the Rays won when Walls returned as the starting SS?

DJ Stewart, OF, Baltimore Orioles

DJ went 1 for 5 (a double) with 2 RBI, 2 runs scored, and 5 strikeouts over the past week. On the season, Stewart is hitting an abysmal .211 this season, and his playing time has been steadily declining. He appeared in only 2 of Baltimore’s 6 games.

John Nogowski, 1B, St. Louis Cardinals

Nogowski was designated for assignment by St. Louis on Monday, and was then traded to Pittsburgh on Saturday. The first baseman/pinch hitter will report directly to the Pirates and is in the starting lineup today. Best of luck to John with his new squad.

Kevin Cash, Manager, Tampa Bay Rays

Cash’s Rays have hit a rough patch as of late, going 1-5 over the last 7 days. Tampa Bay was outscored 37-18 in those 6 games. The good news is that his team still finds themselves in 2nd place in the AL East. The bad news, however, is that they’re 4.5 games behind Boston, who is red hot at the moment.
